To ensure that the United States continues to be a global leader in the field of High-Performance Computing (HPC), President Obama issued an Executive Order establishing the National Strategic Computing Initiative (NSCI) on July 30, 2015. This National Strategic Computing Initiative will create a cohesive, multi-agency strategic vision and Federal investment strategy, executed in collaboration with Department of Defence, Department of Energy, the National Science Foundation, industry, and academia, to maximize the benefits of HPC and exascale computing for the nation. This Executive Order will infuse new resources to support the design and construction of exascale supercomputers, and streamline a wide range of new 21st century applications designed to advance core technologies to solve the most difficult computational problems, as well as fostering the use of new capabilities in the public and private sectors. The NCSI will drive forward critical goals of exaflop computing in the disciplines of genomics, mass analytics, and climate research. The impact of the National Strategic Computing Initiative is expected to be felt across the entire HPC community, enabling the tackling of increasingly complex problems, and helping to accelerate the nation into a new era of discovery and understanding.
