CARC at D2K Day

February 20, 2015 – The UNM Center for Advanced Research Computing (CARC) participated in UNM’s annual Cyberinfrastructure Day (CI) with an informational booth showcasing high-performance computing and data-intensive research at the university. The event was co-sponsored by the Office of the Vice President for Research and UNM Information Technologies.

Presentation highlights at the CARC booth included Datalytic Solutions by Sergey Pils; The Language Diversity of Computing by Jeremy Yang; Geodesign NM by Eric Bernard; The Tony Hillerman Portal by Kevin J. Comerford; and a talk by Jack Ox on the visualization toolkit for artists and scientists.

CI Day focuses on the advancement and interdisciplinary integration of New Mexico’s research and teaching communities by promoting the sharing of data, approaches, expertise, and tools to solve data-enabled research challenges, as well as encouraging critical reflections on how data is used to create new knowledge. The event is aimed at fostering active communication among faculty, researchers, technologists, and students to promote collaborative working relationships and collective problem solving.

 The format included PechaKucha (20 slides shown for 20 seconds each) presentations - lightning talks such as one presented by Dean Philip T. Ganderson on Mechanical Turk, panel discussions, and hands-on workshops that explored new, large-scale data sources and tools to analyze them.

An important goal of the event was to bring together engaged intellectuals from many disciplines and perspectives to effectively develop and use cyberinfrastructure in New Mexico, thus giving UNM an advantage in attracting excellent new scholars and winning external research funding, and contributing to the vitality and competitiveness of New Mexico’s academic community.

The event was free and designed for anyone interested in data-enabled research and teaching across the humanities, social sciences, the arts, and Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) fields.

The CI Day Program co-chairs were CARC Director Susan R. Atlas (Physics and Astronomy); Karl Benedict (University Libraries); Patrick Bridges (Computer Science); Trilce Estrada (Computer Science); Michail Faloutsos (Computer Science); Fred Gibbs (History); and Jonathan Wheeler (University Libraries). Committee members were Moira Gerety (Information Technologies) and Kevin Malloy (Office of the Vice President of Research).
